10 Books That Would Be Geektastic Movies

On of the trends in Hollywood right now is to remake classic "geeky" films instead of tackling the plethora of beloved books that are just ripe for adapting.

What makes a book "geeky" doesn't necessarily mean strictly science fiction; it's a label that includes books whose characters and plot would appeal to those of the geek persuasion.

We've picked 10 books -- in no particular order -- that we think would make great films and create new legions of movie-geek fans.

They Used 'Schmucks' in a Movie Title? What Chutzpah!

'Dinner for Schmucks' posterI have mixed feelings about 'Dinner for Schmucks.' Not the movie, just the title. Not the whole title, just that last word.

As an assimilated Jew of Eastern European extraction, I'm proud that the Yiddish my ancestors spoke when they arrived at Ellis Island more than a century ago has now so thoroughly permeated everyday American English that Hollywood can feel comfortable putting a Yiddish word like 'Schmucks' in a movie title and assume everyone will know what it means. On the other hand, everyone obviously does not know what it means, including perhaps the filmmakers and the DreamWorks studio marketers, or they might have thought twice about using a word that's actually a vulgar slang term for a part of a man's body.

Sure, I get that they needed a word that was stronger than just "idiots," but would anyone be able to get away with calling a movie 'Dinner for D--kheads'?

Did Disco Bring Down the Soviet Union? Watch 'Disco and Atomic War' Now

Conventional wisdom says the collapse of the Soviet Union was caused by a sea change of political and economic factors, but did the murder of J.R. Ewing on 'Dallas' also contribute to the old guard's demise?

An entertaining and thought-provoking addition to SummerFest, SnagFilm's limited run, six-week showcase of critically acclaimed festival documentaries, 'Disco and Atomic War' examines the juxtaposition between a totalitarian government's control of the airwaves and the citizen's ability and desire to receive alternate forms of entertainment and information.

'Countdown to Zero' Prize Pack Giveaway

'Countdown to Zero' (in theaters July 30), a documentary directed by the acclaimed Lucy Walker, follows the history of the atomic bomb, from its first incarnation to its current mammoth impact on global affairs.

The film stars some of the most influential statesman in the world, including President Jimmy Carter, Mikhail Gorbachev, Pervez Musharraf and Tony Blair. And it makes a compelling argument in support of worldwide nuclear disarmament, a sensitive and controversial issue actively being addressed by the Obama administration.

10-Minute Redband Preview of 'Piranha 3D' Leaks Onto Internet

If you thought the leaked 'Thor' trailer was something crazy, then this 10-minute preview of August's 'Piranha 3D' will take a big bite out of that, chew it up, and send a school of cannibalistic fish to devour the remains. This is the mother of leaked clips. This was the preview that was supposed to screen at Comic-Con -- but organizers canceled the screening after they felt this footage was "inappropriate."

While you're waiting for the preview to load (it's a whole 10 minutes!), here's everything you need to know about 'Piranha 3D': It's about thousands of cannibalistic fish that descend upon Spring Break to feast upon hundreds of drunk college students, who are too busy partying to see the blood in the water. Oh, and the whole thing is in 3-D (in case, you thought 'Piranha 3D' was a metaphor or something).

So watch it the video now. WARNING: This video contains graphic violence, excessive blood and gore, strong sexual content, nudity, adult language, and hostility towards fish.

Second Look: 'Waterworld' - Is It Really All That Bad?

Kevin Costner, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Tina Majorino in 'Waterworld'

It's hard to believe, but 15 years ago this week 'Waterworld' was released (on a somewhat suspecting public). Yes, time flies when it comes to legendarily awful movies, and 'Waterworld,' dubbed "Fishtar" by some, is right up there on many Top Flops lists.

The film is widely considered part of the one-two punch that derailed the previously red-hot career of its star and co-producer, Kevin Costner, who also reportedly took over director Kevin Reynolds' duties at one point. (Two years later, 'The Postman' would complete the KO.) To be sure, 'Waterworld' was in trouble before it even reached the screen. Over-budget, behind schedule and beleaguered by production woes, the movie was anticipated for all the wrong reasons by a press and public who smelled blood after Costner's underwhelming 'Wyatt Earp.'

Was it really all that bad? We recently took another look at 'Waterworld' (the 135-minute theatrical version; not the 176-minute director's cut aired by ABC in 1998), and yep, it's pretty bad, if not quite the total disgrace it's celebrated as. But it does have a few fun, over-the-top aspects going for it.

Our Favorite Bill Murray Movie Moments

Bill Murray at Tribeca Film FestivalThere are not many comic actors as beloved as Bill Murray, and for very good reason.

Since his mainstream debut as a 'Saturday Night Live' regular in 1977, his offbeat, goofball persona has mellowed into a deadpan, bone-dry humor that's equally, if not more, hilarious. His acting chops have also sharpened with age; some of his film performances have been downright poignant ('Broken Flowers'). For longtime fans, there is no one cooler or funnier. Murray is (still) The Man.

The latest incarnation of his comic and dramatic talents is undertaker Frank Quinn in the dramedy 'Get Low,' co-starring Robert Duvall and Sissy Spacek, opening Friday. (The always-game Murray recently injured his head in a David Letterman dumpster pool-diving stunt and though he soldiered through the subsequent interview, he had to skip a screening of the film that night.)

In celebration of his latest movie -- and the 30th anniversary of 'Caddyshack' -- we bring you some of our favorite Murray movie moments (at least of the clips that are available), a near impossible feat with so much greatness to choose from, we soon realized. Which didn't stop us.
