After starring in blockbuster movies such as 'Land of the Lost' and 'Step Brothers,' actor/comedian Will Ferrell is going the indie route with 'Everything Must Go,' an independent film based on the short story by Raymond Carver.The movie, set to start shooting next March, marks the directorial debut of Dan Rush, whose previous work has been with humorously themed commercials. The script, Rush's first screenplay, sees Ferrell as a man who loses his job and gets locked out of the house by his wife. After she throws all his belongings on the front lawn, Ferrell spends the next few days living on the lawn and selling his possessions to make ends meet.
The script was recently featured on The Black List, a list of the most popular unproduced screenplays of the year as ranked by development executives, which led Rush to numerous meetings with leading men before Ferrell signed on. Rush had been offered other development deals, but declined them in lieu of making 'Go.'
While Ferrell is mostly known for his over-the-top, sophomoric brand of humor, producer Marty Bowen insists the comedian can display the gravitas needed for a more serious role. "Will is one of the best at making an audience sympathize with a character's ordeal, and the blending and comedy in this script will show a side of him that we haven't really seen before," Bowen recently told Variety.
The original story is far from a comedy, and to pull this one off, we're hoping Ferrell delves in the same emotional waters he used to portray Harold Crick in 2006's criminally underrated 'Stranger Than Fiction.' Despite the role, Ferrell isn't exactly abandoning his big-budget status anytime soon. The actor is currently shooting 'The Other Guys,' an action/comedy with Mark Wahlberg and Michael Keaton, set for release next summer.
